How to pick outfits for your family portrait session: 3 tips for picking outfits for family pictures9/2/2021
Whether you have a large or small family picking outfits for portraits that will hang on your wall for years to come can be challenging. I mean think about it… trying to coordinate outfits that match but fit each person’s personal style is HARD. I even struggle with it and I do this for a living! My hope is that these three tips will help you in deciding what to wear. And as always, if you aren’t sure, reach out and I am happy to help!!
Tip 1: Pick 2 or 3 colors to use in your outfits.
If you don’t know where to start… think about this. What are the colors that you love on your kids, husband, and yourself? It’s possible that you love one color on every person! I hear ya, blue is such a flattering color on a lot of people. If that is the case, vary the shades of blue! Your husband could wear a plaid blue, white, and grey shirt while your daughter wears a navy sweater! Peep the picture below for an example of different shades of a color for your family pictures.
If different colors come to mind, see if you can incorporate those colors together. For example, say you like navy blue, blush pink, and cream. You could totally use all those colors. One person could wear navy blue, one could wear the blush pink, one could wear cream, and then maybe that last person wears a combination! Or maybe you like the neutral look and each of you varies in that! There are so many possibilities! If you need help visualizing this, look at the pictures below.
3 or 4 colors give you options for both a large or small family! Tip 2: Avoid being too matchy matchy!
Looking back in time, so many family pictures had the girls in one outfit, the boys in another outfit, and the adults in similar outfits as well. Don’t get me wrong, I cherish those types of family pictures (I have them too), but each person gets lost in the pictures that way. Don’t you want to remember each person and how they are at this moment? Allowing each person to pick out an outfit they feel comfortable in and showcases their style will make your family pictures that much more special! You’ll see true confidence shine through this way and will remember each person much more than those cookie cutter family pictures! If you need some inspiration, head over to out pinterest!
Tip 3: Pick your outfits, then walk away until picture day.
I’m an over-thinker. If you are too, this tip is for you. Once you pick your 2-3 colors and the exact outfits, your job is done. Lay them out and then walk away! If you keep starring at them you will start to not like them and want to change the whole scheme. Trust me, your initial pick is what you want. It’s the colors and outfits you like the most. Hence why you picked them first! Pick the outfits, lay them out, and come back to them the day before pictures!
