When Should I Take My Senior Photos? Here’s What to Consider

One of the biggest questions we hear is: what’s the best time of year to take my photos? The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer—it all depends on the vibe you’re going for. Whether you’re picturing spring flowers, crisp fall leaves, snowy backdrops, or golden summer sunsets, the season you choose helps set the tone for your entire session. Timing matters, and we’re here to help you figure it all out.

It’s not just about weather, it’s about what speaks to you and the vibe you want to create. Whether you’re envisioning vibrant flowers, cozy sweaters, or golden-hour magic, the timing of your shoot plays a huge role in bringing that vision to life.

Want Flowers or Green Fields? Book Early!

If you're dreaming of wildflowers, fresh greenery, or that bright springtime energy in your photos, aim for late spring or early summer. This is when everything is blooming, colors are vibrant, and the natural light is soft and beautiful.

These early months tend to book up fast (especially with the school year wrapping up and summer activities kicking off) so try to schedule your session in advance to get those stunning floral backdrops!

Want Fall Vibes or Even Snow? Book Later in the Season

If autumn colors, cozy sweaters, and crisp golden light sound more like your style, then September through early November is your sweet spot. Fall is one of the most popular times for senior photos, and it’s easy to see why—nature puts on a beautiful show!

For winter lovers hoping to capture snowy scenes or holiday vibes, late November through January is ideal—just be ready to bundle up and embrace the chill!

Thinking About a Sunset Session? Timing Is Everything

Those soft, golden hour moments just before sunset can make your photos absolutely magical. But it’s important to remember that the time of day matters just as much as the time of year.

If you’re hoping for those gorgeous sun-drenched portraits, we’ll want to plan your session to start about 1–2 hours before sunset. The exact timing shifts throughout the year, so we’ll work together to schedule your shoot when that light is just right for your location and vision.

Using a Senior Portrait for the Yearbook? Know Your Deadline

This one’s important! If you’re hoping to use one of your senior portraits as your official yearbook photo, make sure you know your school’s submission deadline. Most schools require yearbook photos to be submitted sometime between early fall and mid-winter, depending on the publication timeline.

That means you’ll want to schedule your session well before the deadline to give yourself time to select your favorite image and have it edited and submitted on time. Don’t worry—we can help guide you through that process!

There’s no “right” time to take senior portraits—just the right time for you. Whether you want barefoot summer shots, rich fall colors, snowy magic, or glowing sunset light, we’ll help you plan a session that feels personal, relaxed, and totally authentic.
